What are Lanyards and What are They Used For
Most commonly lanyards will be seen in offices and businesses as a way for employees to display their corporate ID cards – a lanyard is simply a strap, normally worn around the neck, and is most commonly used to carry identification. This is usually a much more convenient way to carry ID than in a pocket or wallet where it can be easily lost or forgotten. Many businesses have different lanyards for different reasons, which we’ll look at later.
Other Uses for Lanyards
We’ve looked at using lanyards to hold corporate IDs but there are other uses for lanyards, we’ve seen people use them to hold keys, whistles, mobile phones and mp3 players. Anything small enough that needs to be quickly accessed could potentially be attached to a lanyard. They can also be popular as a promotional item for businesses, with lanyards capable of being printed in corporate colours and with a corporate logo at low cost.
As well as the benefits of providing a secure way for employees to carry their ID cards, lanyards have a number of other benefits for businesses:
Providing Uniformity
In addition to the company ID itself, lanyards offer uniformity in the way all employees wear their ID cards. These lanyards also allow the security personnel of businesses to easily keep track of which employee is wearing their ID card in the prescribed manner. This also helps the security personnel identify if anyone entering the premises is authorised to do so as many businesses will issue visitor ID with a different coloured lanyard to those of their regular employees (and no lanyard at all means someone definitely isn’t authorised!).
Branding
In addition to the designs that the ID card itself has, the lanyards can also be customised to match or reflect corporate colours or ID card designs. The name of the company can also be printed on the lanyards, this ensures that the brand is visible anywhere that employees visit – conferences, client sites or even just the local coffee shop as they get their lunch.
Lanyards can also be customised whenever the business is celebrating a special occasion, for example, an anniversary of the business may be printed on the lanyard to announce and celebrate such a special event. Occasions such as Christmas, New Year, or perhaps the commemoration of the number of years service an employee has given the company can all be marked and highlighted on company lanyards.
An Additional Form of Identification
Bigger businesses may issue lanyards in different colours as a way to easily identify which department a particular employee belongs to. For instance, employees in the finance department may wear green coloured lanyards, the ones in marketing may be wearing blue lanyards, and so forth. This allows security personnel to easily identify if a certain employee is malingering or hanging out in different departments during their working hours when they should be in their respective stations. Customised lanyards can be printed in any colour and with a variety of text included to allow this.
Ease of Use
Having lanyards attached to your ID cards makes the process of finding where you placed your ID card in the first place much easier. Having a lanyard also allows you to easily wear your ID card whenever you enter The Office premises.
It’s not just large corporate that will make use of lanyards, schools, universities and hospitals will often issue staff IDs carried on lanyards. Organisers of sports events may want a way to identify competitors and festival organisers will often issue ID cards carried on lanyards to attendees with extra levels of access such as artists, press and sound engineers. This extra level of ID allows them to be distinguished from the general public, who will normally just be wearing festival wristbands.
So for those who think lanyard are just for holding the ID card of an employee in place, think again. If your office issues printed lanyards, the next time you wear your office ID to go to work, remember that your lanyards has a lot of different uses and purposes that not only help you, but everyone else in the workplace.
